Strength and Expertise

Our unit is the leading sleep centre in Hong Kong for education, research and clinical services for all categories of sleep related disorders across the life span. Our physicians and technicians are very experienced. There are 4 registered polysomnographic technologists ¡V the largest number in a single sleep centre in Hong Kong. We perform attended sleep recordings with trained technicians observing and manually editing every sleep study. We hold very good relationship with many prosperous sleep centres and associations in Mainland China. Our director and chief technologist have been invited to give lectures and talks in Mainland China for a number of times. Doctors, nurses and technicians from some major China cities have visited us for clinical and technical training on various sleep related disorders.

Special Facility and Equipment

We use computerized polysomnographic systems with video and audio facilities for comprehensive assessment and management of the sleep related disorders.
There are 4 public and 1 private single bedrooms with toilet and central air-conditioning dedicated only for sleep studies at our unit. They are fully equipped, with close-circuit television and audio monitoring, intercom communication, call-bell, and Oxygen and suction units in each room. Carpets, black-out curtains, rubber rims around the doors, and double-layer windows are installed in all rooms for reducing light and noise that may disturb the patients during sleep studies. Double doors are installed in some rooms.

Collaboration, Partners and Multi-centre Trials Capability

For the ongoing clinical trial on traditional Chinese Medicine for Insomnia, this is a multi-center, double-blind controlled trial in patients with complaints of insomnia. Subjects aged 18-65 years with primary insomnia will be recruited from the Shatin/Prince of Wales Hospital (SH/PWH) center and Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) centers. Subjects will be randomly assigned to either treatment group or placebo group for a 4-week period of treatment. Approximately 100 subjects in each center will participate in the double-blind phase of the study. This project was funded by Consortium for Globalization of Chinese Medicine (CGCM). In addition, there are a number of international multi-center studies of sleep problems that are being in the preparation phase.
