The Centre for Clinical Trials was established in 2003 under the School of Public Health in order to promote clinical research especially in clinical trials. The Centre aims to provide a research infrastructure to support local, regional and international clinical trials carried out in Asia. Clinical trials are identified as the most rigorous scientific methods for addressing clinically important questions. The future expansion of clinical trials in Asia is important. The following are a few reasons:
- Etiology, environmental risk factors and special characteristics relevance to the local population are important considerations in safety and efficacy assessment. We are familiar to the cultural and ethnics differences among various populations in Asia.
- Asia may emerge as an important player in the global developments of pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. The close collaboration between academia and industry is mutually beneficial to obtain data with high quality with an efficient research infrastructure for new drug development and biotechnology innovation.
- Asian populations are different from those in the West with respect to genetic predisposition to many diseases. CCT beliefs that pharmacogenomics would make important contribution and therefore take on an active role in the biostatistics and bioinformatics research in this area.
